Are you a good storyteller?

Without storytelling, you cannot create the emotion that moves people. Everything else falls short.

Without storytelling, you cannot create the emotion that moves people. Everything else falls short.

I feel strongly about this. As a marketer, as a person, storytelling is the most unique and compelling thing you can do. If you don’t have it, nothing else fully works.

I’m teaching my kid to tell stories. And it’s made me think hard about what it actually takes.

Good storytelling needs many things. Lots of reading. Deep understanding. Personal experience. And something people can truly relate to. Miss any of these and the story falls flat. Every time.

Then I brought that back to work.

If you’re not telling stories inside your company, inside your product marketing, inside your launches, you’re leaving a lot on the table.

I hear people say: I’m tired of advocating. I’m tired of repeating myself. I get it. But that’s the wrong mindset.

Stories make us more powerful. Stories build community. Stories get products to customers and make them resonate. This isn’t new. Gilgamesh. 1001 Nights. The whole arc of human history. It’s all built on stories.

People want their stories told. I don’t think we’re doing it enough. How important is storytelling in your work?
